  2. * BTG1 family signature *

  5. A novel   family  of  anti-proliferative  proteins  has  been  recently  [1,2]
  6. characterized:
  7.  
  8.  - Mammalian  and  avian  protein BTG1. BTG1 seems to negatively regulate cell
  9.    proliferation.
  10.  - Rat and mouse NGF-inducible protein PC3/TIS21.
  11.  
  12. The proteins have from 158 to 171 amino acid residues. PC3/TIS21 seems to have
  13. a signal sequence; while  BTG1 may lack such a domain.  The  sequence of these
  14. proteins are  extremely  well  conserved.  As a signature pattern  we  chose a
  15. perfectly conserved  16  residue  segment  from  the  central section of these
  16. proteins. This signature includes one of three conserved cysteines.
